You've probably heard the slogan, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. On the waste heirarchy pyramid, these are preferable to throwing things away. Even better is prevention. To do this, we need to make purchase decisions based on longevity. Often the least expensive options are not long-lasting. Products that may be cheaper up front, are frequently unfixable, unupgradeable, unrecyclable, and may end up costing you more due to frequent replacement. Consider putting a little more money into a product up front, with the idea you and the environment will save in the long run!
